For years, people have been asking:
"Do young people in Plovdiv still say maina, or has everyone switched to bro?"
Relax, maina. Plovdiv's identity isn't that easy to erase.
Maina is a word with a long journey. It has travelled through the city's many layers, shaped by Greek influence, the streets of ancient Philippopolis, the hills of Plovdiv and countless tegels—those aimless walks that somehow always lead somewhere. Once, it carried a meaning close to mother. Later it became an exclamation. Then a way to greet a friend. Eventually, a password into the local tribe.
Today, it's much more than a word. It's a sign that you're part of the city's code. Yes, young people say bro. They say a hundred other things too, because language never stops changing. But bro belongs to a generation. Maina belongs to a place. It doesn't simply mean friend. It means Plovdiv.
You can hear bro almost anywhere. But only maina brings you back beneath the hills. That's why the word isn't disappearing. It simply doesn't try too hard.
Like everything else in Plovdiv, it lives in its own ailyak rhythm—appearing exactly when it's needed and reminding us that this city has something no other place in Bulgaria does:
A word of its very own.
